Free Produce To Be Distributed Thursday At Cartersville High

CARTERSVILLE, GA — Starting Thursday at noon, free boxes of fresh produce will be distributed to the public from Cartersville High School. No sign-up is necessary, and anybody is eligible, regardless of income, age, family size or other factors.

You don’t even have to be from Bartow County. “You could even drive over from Paulding County if you wanted,” said Cheree Dye, director of community relations for Cartersville City Schools.

Christina Nichols, Cartersville High’s nutrition director, said she expects a “wide variety” of choices each week, including apples, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, squash, lemons and oranges. Recipients are allowed one 20-pound box of produce per week

The effort is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farmers to Families Foodbox program, announced in April by USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue as part of the Coronavirus Farm Assistance Program. The fresh produce will be supplied by Collins Brothers from Forest Park, one of five Georgia vendors approved for the program.

“We were excited to offer this to our families as soon as we learned it was available,” Nichols said. She added that the produce will be distributed every Thursday “for as long as we can.”

Produce will be distributed at the cafeteria door of Cartersville High School, near the Storm Center. Boxes are distributed on a first-come first-served basis.

"We are thankful for the opportunity to provide this food to our families while helping support our farmers," Nichols said.
