Gas Prices Easing in Georgia

While gas prices across the U.S. have been slower to drop, this week Georgia and metro Atlanta have seen about a nickel's worth in declines, AAA figures show.

Thursday, the national average for regular sat at $3.858, compared to $3.824 a week earlier. Across Georgia, the average was $3.793, down nearly 4 cents from a week ago when it was $3.836. Those numbers for metro Atlanta are $3.843 and $3.923, respectively, representing an 8 cent drop.

Prices recently spiked with the threat of Hurricane Isaac, soaring high above the averages of this time last year. Hawaii and California have the highest average gas prices—$4.37 and $4.17, respectively, for a tank of regular.

But relief may be in sight across the country and in Georgia, which has a higher average price than several states, including Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina and Texas.

"AAA expects the national average to decline in the coming months as demand drops off following the busy summer driving period, as refineries switch from summer-blend to less expensive winter-blend gasoline and as hurricane season draws to a close," according to its Fuel Gauge Report published Monday, when the national average price was the highest ever for that calendar day.

AAA's highest recorded average price for Georgia was $4.164 on Sept. 15, 2008.
