Hidden Camera Found at Acworth Salon

The arrested the landlord of a Northeast Cobb salon after evidence uncovered at another salon in Acworth owned by the man gave authorities cause to press charges.

Mark Allen Storch, 54, was arrested at the Acworth location of Salon Avenue Suites on Aug. 10. He has been charged on three counts of felony unlawful eavesdropping or surveillance. He is currently being held in the Cobb Adult Detention Center without bond.

‘Panhandler' Convicted in Tourist's Midtown Killing

Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard Jr. announced Monday a conviction by jury trial in the murder case against 29-year-old Wanique Odwin.

Jurors returned guilty verdicts against Odwin on charges of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a felony in the shooting death of 48-year-old tourist Kashma Avery and one count of aggravated assault against 33-year-old Jay Abernathy, who was traveling with the victim.

Response to State Superintendent’s Position on Charter Schools Mixed

Responses are mixed after State Superintendent Dr. John Barge announced that he opposes an amendment that would allow the state the authority to grant charters to independent schools.

Gov. Nathan Deal, who , told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he was "discouraged that Superintendent Barge has changed his position since the campaign trail and no longer believes parents should have public school options for their children.

"His new position doesn’t change mine. I stand with two-thirds of the General Assembly and will uphold the promises I made when I ran for office: Parents and students should have public school options; this is the best form of local control."

Fired Canton Cop Requests Hearing

In a letter formally appealing his termination as the city's assistant police chief, Todd Vande Zande asked that the  assign a hearing officer "who does not report to the City Manager" to oversee the appellate process.

City clerk Susan Stanton released the letter this morning, one day after the council went into executive session to discuss "possible litigation" against the city. The council did not return from that closed session to make any formal statements to the public.

Previously, the city's attorney has denied that City Manager Scott Wood had any involvement in Vande Zande's termination.

East Point Mayor Sued by Resident and Has Possible Ethics Violation

East Point Mayor Earnestine Pittman is battling not only a lawsuit from two residents wanting her out of office, but also an ethics hearing on Monday that determined she violated her oath of office. 

According to an AJC report, "Collins and fellow East Point resident Dustin Drabot filed a lawsuit Friday, Aug. 10, to have Pittman removed from office. Collins said Pittman has violated her oath of office, failed to follow city ordinances and has violated the city charter and the state code."
