  1. Governor Brian Kemp announced preliminary grant awards for community public safety projects, including efforts to address law enforcement staffing issues that began during the COVID-19 pandemic, on Thursday, Jun. 8. Cartersville is set to receive $221,760 for taser certification bundles, as well as grants made to the cities of Rome and Cedartown, and the Floyd County Board of Commissioners. (WRGA)
  2. Shreesh Tiwari, 70, a Cartersville hotel manager pleaded guilty on Jun. 1 to sex trafficking charges after he allegedly took advantage of and exploited an employee. Per the Department of Justice, Tiwari began managing the Cartersville Budgetel Motel in 2020 and hired the victim as a maid. According to the DOJ, "Tiwari knew that, prior to arriving at the Budgetel, the victim had experienced homelessness, struggled with a heroin addiction and lost custody of her young child. Tiwari promised the victim that he would help her regain custody of her child by providing her with pay, an apartment, and an attorney," and per the DOJ, he followed through on none of these promises.   3. As of Jun. 7, northwest Georgia has gone 21 days without a recorded death from COVID or probable causes related to the virus. Per the Georgia Department of Public Health, the last death or probable death from Floyd, Bartow, Gordon, Polk, and Chattooga counties was reported on May 17. Statewide deaths have continued to drop as well, from 16 deaths in May to eight deaths so far in the week ending Jun. 7. (Northwest Georgia News)
