Here are the top five stories in Cartersville today:
- On Tuesday, a runaway dump truck in northwest Georgia fatally struck two men and left two others with serious injuries. According to local news outlets, the asphalt-carrying truck's brakes failed, causing the vehicle to roll downhill and hit an excavator. 19-year-old Cody Hauser of Cartersville and 21-year-old John Hunter Layne of Kingston were struck and killed in the incident. - The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed another case of monkeypox in the state. A male from metro Atlanta, who has traveled internationally, is Georgia's second case; he is currently isolating at home with contact tracing underway. As of Tuesday, there have been 65 confirmed cases of monkeypox or the related orthopoxvirus in the United States. (Patch)
- The Friends of Red Top Mountain State Park are kicking off the summer season with a volunteer meeting this Saturday, Jun. 18 at 10:00 a.m. The 45-minute meeting will be held at the Conference Center and will be followed by a volunteer workday at the cabin. - Tomorrow (Friday, Jun. 17) at 9:00 a.m. marks the Cartersville-Bartow Chamber's inaugural Project Purpose Signing Day Ceremony. Eleven recent high school graduates who completed a one-week skills training program will sign with their new employers. - The Red Door Food Pantry is seeking volunteers to help unload trucks today at 11:00 a.m. On the third Thursday of each month, the pantry receives a few thousand pounds of food to be unloaded.
