Clark Atlanta's Women’s Empowerment Conference Continues Saturday and Sunday

The Atlanta Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women along with Clark Atlanta University are currently holding the 5th Annual Women's Empowerment Conference on the campus of Clark Atlanta from March 22 - 24.

According to the event website, "the conference theme is, 'Am I my sister’s keeper?' and will cover a range of challenges that affect our female students, including health risks, financial and education-related barriers, managing interpersonal relationships, and a political landscape that inserts majority beliefs into workplace equality and healthcare decisions."

The conference kicked off on Friday evening with a fun-filled party, titled 'Girls Run the World,' in which party-goers were pampered with goody bags, music, dinner, and live entertainment.

The following are the remaining events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.  All events are free.

Community Service – Giving is ‘Multi-generational’

Time: 8:00a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

·Goal:  CAU faculty/staff, community leaders, and college students will work on panels with the Names Foundation (HIV/AIDS Quilt) in honor of AA women in metro Atlanta who have lost their lives to AIDS

Session 1 – Am I My Sister’s Keeper?

Objective: To encourage a spirit of sisterhood among college women; discourage fighting, bullying, and cyber bullying

·Panelists: Ms. Tiffany Dykes (Manager, Minority Outreach, Central Intelligence Agency), Sergeant Tonya Austin, Atlanta Police Department, Zone 2, Member, and CAU Residence Life

Session 2 – One person can change the world

Objective: To encourage participants that they have the power to mobilize and make a change, within their personal networks, community, even the world. Panel will discuss how one person can change issues they see around them, define advocacy, and provide a real life case examples of community mobilization (e.g. HIV, Jena 6, Trayvon Martin).

·Participants: Patricia Gardner, Representative, Georgia House of Representatives, District 57 (invited, will confirm near the close of the legislative session), Ms. Ciji Bhnee Tatum, President, Urban League of Greater Atlanta – Young Professionals (CAU Alumni) (invitation sent), and  Brandi Williams, HIV Prevention Manager, GA Division of Public Health

Session 3 – Smart Saving and Managing Debt

Objective: Various professionals will provide brief presentations to discuss finance essentials: credit cards, establishing and maintaining good credit, debt management, financial aid, refund checks, etc.

Panelists: Member, CAU Financial Aid Department; Robin Holland, VP Equifax 

Session 4 – Career and Workplace Success

Objective: To teach participants that their brand is theirs alone to protect; Discuss self-representation of women on the internet and social networks.
