ATLANTA, GA -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Friday said it is investigating an officer-involved fatal shooting that happened on city of Atlanta property.

The officer shot the man during an altercation that stemmed from investigating a suspicious vehicle at the building. Officers arrived at the complex to do administrative work and smelled marijuana coming from the man's vehicle.

"During the conversation, the male lunged back into the vehicle and attempted to flee. One of the APD detectives was partially in the passenger side of the vehicle," the GBI said in a news release. "The vehicle fled with the detective halfway in the vehicle. The detective fired his gun, striking the male."

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, state law enforcement officials said.

People from the neighborhood and relatives of the victim formed a large crowd outside the scene Friday, asking why police had to shoot the man.

The officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine, according WAGA-TV.

An autopsy will be done by the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office, the GBI said. The findings of the GBI's investigation will be forwarded to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, the agency said.
