Renaming of Greenbriar Pkwy to Tyler Perry Way Proposed in City Council

Tyler Perry Way may soon be the new name of a portion of Greenbriar Parkway that surrounds Greenbriar Mall in southwest Atlanta.  Atlanta City Council members will consider a proposed resolution to rename a portion of Greenbriar Parkway during their March 13th session.

The multimillion dollar filmmaker, Tyler Perry, built Tyler Perry Studios and multiple sound-stages just a few hundred feet from the intersection that soon may carry his name. 

Currently the portion of Greenbriar Parkway that may change runs in-between Greenbriar Mall and SunTrust Bank, where Greenbriar Pkwy and Continental Colony Pkwy split, down almost a mile to Barge Rd.  Along the way there are a number of industrial buildings, 2 small churches, and a new apartment complex.

According to the council's agenda, the City Utilities Committee is initiating the process of the renaming.

A Resolution by City Utilities Committee authorizing the initiation of the process of renaming that portion of Greenbriar Parkway between Barge Road to the west and the intersection of Greenbriar Parkway and Continental Colony Parkway to the east to Tyler Perry Way by and through actions of the Commissioner of Department of Public Works or his designee; and for other purposes. For the resolution to even be considered, at least 75% of the businesses and/or property owners affected, need to approve the name change.  In addition the cost of of new signage will be considered.

Editor's Note:  After this article was published, community advocate Raynard Johnson, told Cascade Patch that, "Resolution 12R0376 is being HELD in the City Utilities Committee and that the Chairperson says they have no intention to bring it forward."
