Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. Author Marc Tyler Nobleman recently spoke at several elementary schools in Forsyth County, addressing the legacy of Batman co-creator Bill Finger and his struggle for recognition. During his talk, Nobleman briefly mentioned Finger's son, who is part of the LGBTQ+ community. Following criticism and parental complaints, a school principal issued an apology, but Nobleman strongly believes that mentioning someone's sexual orientation shouldn't require an apology. He intends to maintain the content of his talk to provide support and representation for students questioning their own identity. Forsyth County has faced other challenges regarding potentially controversial material, including a ban on books like "All Boys Aren’t Blue," a memoir about the gay Black experience. (The Messenger)
  2. Holocaust survivor Esther Basch, who endured Auschwitz during World War II, visited Forsyth County to impart her story and her message of love and resilience. In honor of her mission, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners declared Aug. 24 as Peace, Goodness, and Kindness Day. The proclamation was accepted by Rabbi Levi Mentz of Congregation Beth Israel on behalf of Basch during an Aug. 17 meeting. (Forsyth County, Georgia)
