Georgia Police Chief: ‘I’m Truly Living My Dream Every Day’
"If you're looking for a job that matters, this is the one," says Chief PJ Girvan of the Cumming Police Department.

First responders are a vital part of our communities, keeping us safe and playing an integral role in daily life. Patch and T-Mobile have partnered on a Ride-Along series to showcase the important work these departments and individuals do every day.
We had the opportunity to speak with Chief PJ Girvan of the Cumming Police Department to learn more about the department, life as a law enforcement officer and the impact of their work.
Can you tell us about the Cumming Police Department?
Chief Girvan: The City of Cumming spans approximately 8 square miles. Our police department is currently fully staffed with 25 sworn officers and 3 civilian employees, and we’re set to add two additional officer positions this June. Our agency is made up of several key divisions, including the Uniform Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Traffic Unit and our newly established Real-Time Crime Center Unit. While we may be a smaller agency, we are forward-thinking and committed to providing top-tier service and safety to our community.
What does a typical day look like for a police officer in Cumming?
Chief Girvan: Our uniform patrol officers work 12-hour shifts. Monday through Friday, the city sees a steady flow of traffic from commuters, making it a very active time for our officers. On weekends, especially when there are events at the Cumming City Center, our focus shifts to ensuring public safety and managing event security. These events have been hugely successful, drawing large crowds, and we work hard behind the scenes to make sure they remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
What inspired you to get involved in law enforcement?
Chief Girvan: Law enforcement runs in my blood—both of my parents served in this profession. From a young age, I knew this was my calling. I’m truly living my dream every day. This career has given me so much, and after all these years, I still have a deep passion for it.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Cumming community?
Chief Girvan: I was born and raised in this community, and my roots run deep here. My family lives here, and I care about this city on a personal level. Being able to serve and protect the place I call home is incredibly meaningful. I take a lot of pride in helping to keep Cumming a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
What advice would you offer to someone considering a career in Cumming?
Chief Girvan: I’d encourage anyone interested to take the time to do a ride-along or internship with different agencies. Talk to the officers—not just command staff—so you get a real feel for what the job is like. Recruitment is tough these days, so understanding the culture and challenges of a department before joining is important. This career has its highs and lows, like any other, but there’s nothing like the feeling of making a difference—saving a life, helping someone through a tough moment or getting a dangerous person off the streets. If you're looking for a job that matters, this is the one.
