Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:
- On Wednesday, a free Naloxone training at The Connection in Cumming was held by local advocates Patty Fairley and Pat Bennie. Both work to educate and distribute Naloxone, trying to break the cycle of addiction and raise awareness about the epidemic's toll on individuals, exemplified by Bennie's own loss. Despite the potency of drugs like fentanyl, the distribution of around 9,000 Naloxone kits by organizations like Georgia Overdose Prevention has successfully reversed overdoses, prompting advocates to continue their efforts in extending recovery opportunities. (11 Alive)
- Karima Jiwani, a Georgia mother accused of abandoning her newborn in the woods in a plastic bag, has been indicted by a Forsyth County grand jury on charges of attempted murder and cruelty to children. The indictment follows her arrest four years after the incident, in which the baby, known as "Baby India," was found in 2019. The indictment alleges that Jiwani intentionally placed the newborn in a bag and discarded her in a secluded area, leading to a criminal attempt to commit murder charge. (11 Alive)
- In Forsyth County, a 57-year-old man from nearby Atlanta was arrested in a Taco Bell parking lot on Bethelview Road. The arrest on Jul. 24 was made on charges of forgery, theft, and fraud. Deputies stopped the suspect driving a stolen Ford F-150 with a tag from Connecticut, though the vehicle was reported stolen as a Hyundai Elantra. The man claimed to be a car salesman and mentioned a vehicle purchase issue among coworkers. Further investigation revealed a loaded revolver, false identification cards, and a prior criminal history involving money laundering and wire fraud. He faced charges including forgery, identity fraud, weapon possession by a convicted felon, theft, and driving without a valid license. (Appen Media)

- During a meeting on Aug. 15, Mayor Troy Brumbalow and Cumming City Council awarded a Key to the City recognition to Dr. John and Mrs. Mary Helen McGruder, long-standing residents of Cumming, in appreciation of their lasting contributions to the community. The McGruders, both with over 40 years of service to Cumming and Forsyth County, met while Mary Helen was studying at North Georgia College and John was an instructor at the Army's Ranger School. With a veterinary degree in hand, John and Mary Helen settled in Cumming in 1983, where John established Crestview Animal Hospital in 1984. Their enduring commitment to the city is marked by their upcoming 55th wedding anniversary and the ongoing operation of Crestview Animal Hospital. (City of Cumming, Georgia)
