Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:
- National Hunting and Fishing Day in Georgia, Sep. 23, will feature a free event in Cumming at Lower Pool Park below Buford Dam. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and is designed for children, offering fishing opportunities, fly-tying demonstrations, and fishing demos. It's suggested to arrive by 9:00 a.m. with a clean, five-gallon bucket for fish. Some loaner fishing poles will be available, and bait will be provided. Safety will be a priority, with life jackets required. (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
- A metro Atlanta no-kill animal shelter, Furkids, is urgently seeking loving homes for dozens of cats as they prepare for essential renovations. They are in dire need of relocating the cats from their current shelter to make way for construction work on their new state-of-the-art cat shelter. The goal is to find permanent homes or foster families for these cats by the end of the week. Note that supplies and veterinary care for those willing to foster will be provided. Interested individuals can apply for adoption or fostering here. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- Forsyth County is warning residents about a scam involving threats of arrest for missing jury duty. There has been a significant increase in reports of this scam in September, with at least one individual losing $1,500. Officials say scammers impersonate courthouse or law enforcement, claiming the victim missed jury duty, before demanding payment. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia emphasizes they will always send jury summonses by U.S. Mail, never demand payment over the phone, and impose fines only after individuals have appeared in court and explained their circumstances. - During the recent city council meeting on Sep. 19, Mayor Troy Brumbalow and the City Council issued a proclamation acknowledging Childhood Cancer Awareness Week, Sep. 25-29. The proclamation was accepted by representatives from the local Relay for Life committee on behalf of the American Cancer Society's Schools vs. Cancer Program. This program encourages children of all ages to collaborate with the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. Learn more here. (City of Cumming, GA - City Hall via Facebook)
- Twenty-two Forsyth County residents have successfully completed the Forsyth County Citizens' Academy, which consisted of eight classes held between June and September 2023. Participants had the opportunity to visit County facilities and engage in discussions with local leaders to learn more about the functions that contribute to the community's well-being.
