Schafer's score of 90 is quite the accomplishment, given the international average score was 61.5.

Schafer then took the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), a challenging competition for those who excelled on the AMC 12. The AIME is a 15-question, 3-hour examination, in which each answer is an integer number between 0 to 999. Results from this exam will be announced on March 8.
The AIME is followed by the USA Mathematical Olympiad and Junior Mathematical Olympiad. The top USAMO and USAJMO participants are invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Program in the summer after the competition. Participants from the Mathematical Olympiad Program are then eligible to be selected for the following summer’s six-member team that will represent the United States of America at the IMO.
