Grandmother Killed In Paulding County House Fire, Grandson Tried To Save Her: Officials

The grandmother was trapped on the second floor of the house. Fire crews got her out and tried to save her, but she died at the hospital.

PAULDING COUNTY, GA — A 70-year-old woman died in a house fire in Paulding County on Friday morning, and her grandson tried to save her, Paulding County Fire/Rescue officials said.

Just before 9:40 a.m. Friday, an 18-year-old boy called 911 and said his house was on fire with his grandmother trapped inside. He managed to escape, but his grandma was stuck on the second floor.

Within five minutes of the call, firefighters and a Paulding County sheriff's deputy arrived. Firefighters found the grandmother unconscious in the hallway on the second floor, and took her to the front yard to start lifesaving measures.

Crews took her to Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica, where she was pronounced dead. The 18-year-old grandson was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene.

While the fire is still under investigation, Paulding fire officials said it appears the fire started on the stove while cooking, and rapidly spread throughout the home.
