Family Believes Grandmother Sacrificed Herself To Save Grandson In House Fire
Jean Skoglund, 70, died in a house fire in Paulding County on Friday. Her family believes she died trying to save her 18-year-old grandson.
PAULDING COUNTY, GA — A grandmother died in a house fire in Paulding County on Friday, and her family said they believe she died trying to save her grandson from the fire, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
Firefighters responded to a fire at a Halehaven Drive home just before 9:40 a.m. Friday, and Jean Skoglund, 70, was stuck on the second floor of the home. Her 18-year-old grandson managed to escape, but tried to go back in to save her; however, he couldn't get past the flames.
Crews found Skoglund unconscious in a hallway on the second floor. They got her out and attempted lifesaving measures, but she died at the hospital.

Skoglund served in the U.S. Army and Air Force, her family told Fox 5 Atlanta, and served two tours overseas. They believe she sacrificed her life to save her grandson.
Paulding County Fire/Rescue officials said it appears the fire started on the stove while cooking, though the fire is still under investigation.

A GoFundMe page said the family lost everything in the fire, and donations will be used for Skoglund's funeral. A total of $2,965 have been raised out of a $5,000 goal as of publication.
