Here are the top five stories in Dallas-Hiram today:
- Parents addressed the Paulding County School District Board of Education during a meeting on Tuesday to ask for help keeping the local Boys and Girls Club open. The district's superintendent, Steve Barnette, had already expressed concerns about the closure following its announcement last week. The club of more than 20 years will close in September if alternate arrangements cannot be made to keep it open. (11 Alive)
- Two Paulding County deputies were awarded the Medal of Merit during the regularly scheduled meeting of the Paulding County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. Corporal Jamie Winkles and Deputy Joshua Bishop received this recognition for their heroic acts during a call on Jun. 24, in which they entered a burning home to rescue several injured children. The Medal of Merit is the second highest honor that can be bestowed upon a deputy. (Paulding County Sheriff’s Office via Facebook)
- The Dallas Public Library has released its August calendar of free programs and events. Highlights include a variety of take-and-make craft kits for children, teens, and adults, as well as classes on genealogy and financial literacy. - The Paulding County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs is hosting a Junior Martial Arts class for kids ages four through six. The class will take place at Mount Tabor Park beginning Sep. 15 and will include instruction in Taekwondo and Karate. Registration opens online next Monday, Aug. 15, at the department website. - The Paulding County Board of Education and district staff welcomed eight new principals at a reception on Tuesday evening. The event at the district's central office recognized three new elementary school principals, three new middle school principals, and two new high school principals.
