Here are the top 5 stories today in Dallas-Hiram:

  1. Trump is not ruling out backing Republican Brian Kemp in the Georgia gubernatorial race. According to the CPAC straw poll, Trump has 69% support among attendees in a hypothetical GOP primary in 2024, showing the influence he has over the Republican Party. Ever since his election victory in 2016, Trump has had a rise in support among the CPAC. (Fox News)
  2. Geoff Collins is facing heat after Georgia Tech faced tremendous losses in 2021. He said, "Obviously, a lot of decisions that were made (with the coaching staff) were made for me to be able to spend more time with the defense...all the new, fresh ideas, and people I can lean on as well, have been very beneficial for the program." Coach Collins must show proof that he's moving the program in the right direction and winning games in order to keep his job at Georgia Tech. (Miami Herald)
  3. Stacey Abrams, who will go up against Brian Kemp once again, is using the Kansas abortion vote to encourage new voters in favor of Georgia Democrats. She rolled out an ad blasting Kemp for an abortion restriction law, held a roundtable discussion with women who had abortions, and she sent out a memo explaining why she expects opposition to Republican anti-abortion policies. Abrams claims, "The law can be overturned with the right governor, with the right legislators and with the people of Georgia standing up saying, 'We want better.'" (Hastings Tribune)
  4. An online petition with over one million signatures calls for the impeachment of Georgia native, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Yet, the state Senate voted to install a monument of Thomas in February. Republican Senator Brian Strickland is still in favor of the installation of a Thomas monument on the grounds of the state Capitol. Democrats, on the other hand, argue his court decisions have negatively impacted Black people. (The Union-Recorder)
  5. Football coach Kirby Smart spoke highly of 5-star recruit, sophomore Smael Mondon of Paudling County High School. Before a knee injury that shortened his senior season, he played a vital role in Georgia's special teams unit last year and racked up 12 tackles. Senior safety Chris Smith said, "[Mondon] can pick up on the playbook very well; He's definitely physically gifted." (DawgNation)
