Here are the top stories in Dallas-Hiram today:
- Dallas native Nick Colina is leading in three categories in the ASUN Conference, including triples, OBP, and walks. The Kennesaw State baseball team will play a weekend series against the Lipscomb Bisons, with the Owls sitting three games behind in fifth place. Spencer Hanson, a designated hitter for the Owls, has hit six home runs and collected six multi-hit performances and 19 RBIs over the last seven games. The team holds a streak of 10-straight games with a home run and has five players near the top of the ASUN Conference in various categories. (KSUOwls)
- Former American football player and political candidate Herschel Walker is accused of violating campaign finance laws during his 2022 campaign for a Georgia Senate seat. According to a report from The Daily Beast, Walker asked a high-profile donor to send a political contribution of $535,200 directly to his personal company, HR Talent, LLC, which was not disclosed to the Federal Election Commission. Legal experts called Walker’s actions “unprecedented” and “stunning,” with no legal way that this could have played out. Despite the scandal, Walker lost the election to Raphael Warnock. (Yahoo News)
- Wellstar Health System has been included in DiversityInc's annual "Top 50 Companies for Diversity" ranking, specifically on the list of 20 top hospitals and health systems for diversity in the nation. The rankings are based on DiversityInc's survey submissions from U.S. employers with at least 750 employees, with the same data used to determine the top hospitals and health systems list. The six key areas considered for diversity are leadership accountability, human capital diversity metrics, talent programs, workforce practices, supplier diversity, and philanthropy. - Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens has issued an open letter to the city following a mass shooting that occurred on May 3. The mayor expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, as well as his gratitude for the first responders and law enforcement agencies involved in the incident. The mayor called for action to prevent future mass shootings, stating that gun violence is too common in America and that national action is needed to change how mental health is treated and to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. He also emphasized the need for unity and collective action to stop these events from happening again. (City of Atlanta)
