Decatur's Burnt Fork BBQ Shuts Down

The southern barbecue and vegan joint on Church Street announced its permanent on Dec. 18.

On the heels of a few recent restaurant closures in Decatur, Burnt Fork BBQ’s operators let patrons and fans know on Thursday that they have shut their doors for good.

The post on Facebook read: “Well folks after 4 years of hard work we’ve decided to close our doors. We really appreciate your support and we wish you all well. -Josh and Kara”

Head chef Josh Kramer had posted earlier on the Burnt Fork Facebook page that they were “[going] through a lot of big changes in a short period of time” and that owners had “said goodbye to a lot of [their] senior employees.”

The eatery closed on Saturday, Dec. 13, without indicating it was anything but temporary. According to the Burnt Fork answering machine message, the restaurant planned to resume service on Sunday, Dec. 21, for normal working hours.

The spring 2011 issue of Decatur Living magazine says the restaurant’s three owners Kara Ferris, chef Josh Kramer and Josh’s father, John, chose to use only hormone and antibiotic-free meat, eggs and dairy products from humanely-raised animals. One of their main food sources was organic farm cooperative Moonshine Meats in Athens.

“Living up to [these standards] is very important to us,” Ferris told the magazine. “It takes a lot of time and energy because the supply is limited. But we are deeply committed.”

Other Decatur eateries to have closed up shop in recent months are the Harbour House Pub, the casual seafood restaurant also on Church Street, and Big Tex on Ponce de Leon Avenue.
