STONE MOUNTAIN, GA -- Dr. R. Stephen Green, who has led the DeKalb County school system since 2015, will leave his position as superintendent at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. A national search for DCSD’s future superintendent will begin next month, and Green will remain to help transition the role. Green advised the DeKalb County Board of Education of his decision last week, attributing his departure to personal reasons after thoughtful consideration with his family.

“We are grateful to Superintendent Green for his service to our district for the last four years. He is a dynamic leader with a strong focus on student achievement leading to higher education, work and life-long learning,” said Dr. Michael Erwin, chair of the DeKalb County Board of Education. “During his tenure we’ve seen the system’s graduation rates increase as well as student participation in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs.

“Change in leadership can be challenging, so we are thankful Dr. Green will be with us for one more year as we conduct a thorough and thoughtful search for our next superintendent,” Erwin continued. “We are committed to a collaborative transition to ensure the future success for our District’s students.”

“The DeKalb County Schools community is truly inspirational. I am proud to have the opportunity to help lead our students to achieve educational excellence alongside our exceptional teachers and staff,” said Green. “I’m excited to see what the future holds for our District and our students – both have limitless potential.”

During Green’s tenure, DCSD regained full accreditation and received a five-year renewal in 2017 from AdvancED. His vision to decentralize the District office to place more emphasis on support services in the field for students and their families has led the way for significant academic growth and achievement. DCSD’s College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) scores continue to climb each year as well as student progress on the Georgia Milestones End of Course and End of Grade tests.
