One Dead In Decatur Car Crash

A 72-year-old man was killed Friday morning when his vehicle crashed into a tree on W. Ponce de Leon Avenue.

DECATUR, GA — A man was killed Friday morning in Decatur when his vehicle slammed into a tree and caught on fire. Police said the single-car crash happened just around 9:50 am, when Melvin Cooper's 2011 Toyota Taris suddenly left the roadway in the 800 block of West Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Cooper, 72, was a resident of East Point, Georgia.

West Ponce de Leon Avenue between West Parkwood Road and Upland Road was closed for a short period of time after the accident.
