Woman Attacked On Her Way Home In Downtown Decatur

The incident happened early Friday morning at the intersection of Sycamore Place and Commerce Drive. Police are looking for the suspect.

DECATUR, GA -- Police are investigating a sexual battery that happened early Friday morning in downtown Decatur. The victim told police that around 1:20 am, she left the Decatur MARTA Station on Church Street and began walking home. She saw a man walking behind her as she exited the fare gates at the train station and believed the suspect possibly boarded the train at the Five Points Station, but they did not ride in the same car.

The woman told police she walked northbound on Church Street, then eastbound on East Ponce de Leon Avenue and saw the man following her on the other side of the road. She said the suspect called out and made a sexually explicit statement to her and then crossed to her same of the street and continued to follow her.

The woman deliberately passed her residence because she didn't want the suspect to know where she lived. The man then ran toward her and grabbed her near the intersection of East Ponce de Leon Avenue and Sycamore Place. She was able to escape and call police.

Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 40’s, about 5’6” and 200 pounds, medium build, walking with a noticeable limp, wearing a blue hoodie and carrying a black backpack.
