Responding officers saw the car leaving the area of the dispute and tried to stop it. The GBI said the driver refused to stop and led police on a chase that entered Douglas County.

A PIT maneuver was conducted on the car, ending the chase on Thornton Road in Lithia Springs, the GBI said.

The driver, a 38-year-old Douglasville man, began reaching under his seat; an officer then shot Tuggle, the GBI said. The woman passenger was also shot during the incident, the GBI said.

Charges in the case are unknown. Once the GBI's investigation is complete, the case file will be turned over to the Douglas Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

This is the 37th shooting involving an officer the GBI has been requested to investigate this year.
