Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:
- Over Memorial Day Weekend, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office apprehended a driver and charged them with trafficking in methamphetamine. On Saturday, May 27, the unnamed driver was pulled over at the Post Road Shell Station for speeding and a faulty brake light; it was later determined they lacked a valid driver's license and insurance. Upon further investigation, authorities found 277 grams of methamphetamine, eight grams of marijuana, two scales, and an unidentified substance. - This summer, the Douglas County School System will provide free meals to local children 18 and younger. The initiative aims to provide students the same access to quality nutrition they typically receive during the school year. A list of participating locations and summer menus can be found here. - In 2023 alone, at least 33 Georgia youths have lost their lives to gun violence. Multiple deaths have been recorded across the Atlanta metro, including the fatal shooting of two teenagers at a Sweet 16 house party in Douglasville on Mar. 4. The families of the victims continue to face the loss of their children, while many parents in the metro are calling for action to stop gun violence. (WSB Radio)
- The City of Douglasville invites the community to its upcoming Screen on the Green event this Friday, Jun. 2 from 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. at Hunter Memorial Park. The showing of "Bad Guys" will begin at dusk at Harper Field, and food trucks and activities will be on site. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets. (City of Douglasville)
