Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:

  1. At the 2024 Douglas County elections, several incumbents will face opposing candidates. Democratic incumbent Coroner Renee Godwin will face GOP challenger Robert Jones, Democratic incumbent Probate Judge Christina Peterson will face Douglasville attorney Valerie Vie, Democratic incumbent Clerk of Courts Annetta Stembridge will face Anita Zachery, Democratic incumbent Sheriff Tim Pounds will face Cyrus Colley, and Democratic incumbent District 2 County Commissioner Kelly Robinson will face Ruben Tillman.   2. The Douglas County School System will host its second annual Back to School Kickoff this Saturday, Jul. 22 at the DCSS Central Office. From 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., students, parents, and families can enjoy games, food, prizes, school supplies, and more for free. (Douglas County Georgia Schools via Facebook)
  3. The Douglasville Police Department plans to host a community job fair on Saturday, Aug. 5, and is currently seeking businesses to participate. The event will take place on the front lawn of the police department and will feature employers hiring for both full and part-time positions. Businesses interested in participating can contact Sgt.   4. 38-year-old Douglasville woman Shana McDade was recently charged, and is pleading not guilty, for filing a fraudulent insurance claim of $80,000. In May, McDade filed a report with the Sheriff's Office about an alleged theft at her house, claiming that $80,000 worth of equipment was taken. The warrant states that the items listed on the claim were never at her residence. (Subscription: Douglas County Sentinel)
