Douglas County Fire Names First Woman As Lieutenant Fire Suppression

Hundreds looked on as the Douglas County Fire & EMS Department promoted Kaitlyn Massey to lieutenant in fire suppression at a pinning ceremony on Friday, December 16th marking a major milestone for women in the Douglas County’s Fire & EMS Department.

“Never in the fire department’s history has there been a female lieutenant in charge of an entire engine company,” Chairman Jones said. “We’ve had women promoted to lieutenant in administration, but never out in the field, in the trenches, battling blazes as a company officer in charge.”

Kaitlyn Massey joined the fire department in March 2016. “It’s been my goal since I first started here as a firefighter.” Massey said. “I was just in shock when they finally told me I was getting promoted to lieutenant.”

Massey was very excited when she learned that her goal was finally met. “I’ve worked so long and hard and it’s surreal and it finally happened,” Massey said. “It opens perspective to a lot of people being the first. It’s a tough job but, I’m ready.”

Chief Jolivette strongly believes Massey is ready and capable for the key leadership role. “She’s a remarkable asset to our fire department,” Jolivette said. “As we approach the holidays, I know some may think this could be a gift, but it was not a gift. It was totally earned.”

A lifelong Douglasville native, Massey remains dedicated to her community. “We are here for people on their worst days, and we have to be our best for them,” Massey said. “I wouldn’t be here without my family and my co-workers.”

Massey is a graduate of Alexander High School, Class of 2014.
