Douglas Officials Break Ground For New SPLOST Projects

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Douglas County officials broke ground Thursday for five SPLOST-funded projects — while wearing face masks, of course.

The projects are a second senior activity center, new tennis courts at Deer Lick Park, the Boundary Waters Park Multipurpose Recreation Center, and concession stands at Fairplay Park and Bill Arp Park. Also, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the county's new digital radio system.

“It was a historic moment for the parks in our county,” Parks and Recreation Committee Chair and District 1 Commissioner Henry Mitchell, III said. “I’m proud of the work being done.”

Normally, the public would have been invited to the ceremonies, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the events were closed to the public. Those who did attend maintained social distancing and wore face coverings.

The brand-new multipurpose center at Boundary Waters Park is a 30,000-square-foot facility, the largest building project in the 2016 SPLOST program.

“As Chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, I’m very pleased at how we remain committed to the betterment of our community even as we navigate through difficult times through this health crisis,” Chairman Romona Jackson Jones said.
