Douglas Sheriff, Douglasville PD Offer Citizen Police Courses

Citizens with a will to learn about how the police department and sheriff's office operate have a chance to get the inside scoop.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Citizens of Douglas County, and more specifically Douglasville, have a chance to see how their county sheriff and city police operate, respectively. Both agencies are offering a citizen police academy.

The Douglasville Police Department offers the academy, which teaches residents about a variety of topics like community policing, criminal investigations, K9 units, SWAT teams, firearms, domestic violence and lots more.

"This program allows for some hands-on exposure and is not only informative, but fun. On top of that we feed the participants dinner!" the website says. See the Douglasville Police Department website for more.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office offers a similar course, with the goal not of making citizens into deputies, but to give citizens insight as to what deputies do.

The 12-week class, for two hours each Thursday, will focus on jail operations, recruiting, patrols, investigations, vice and narcotics, criminal laws and lots more. Trainees will get classroom time as well as practical exercises.
