Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:

  1. Motorists are encouraged to avoid partial road closures and detours at the Stewart Mill Road/Reynolds Road intersection. The Douglas County DOT is conducting road improvements. There will be a series of lane and road closures at the intersection during the life of the project, which may continue until October 2023. (Press Release Desk )
  2. Douglasville's own Trayzel Jureidini-Wyche, who plays as a Carson-Newman linebacker, has been selected as SAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Jureidini-Wyche led the Eagles to a 37-0 SAC win over Erskine last week. He became just the second player in program history to block two kicks in one game, and he had a tackle and a sack. (FloFootball)
  3. The South Douglas Elementary School Media Specialist Ana Leibbrand collaborated with third-grade reading teacher Chrisy Reeves on a Book Tasting experience for all of their third-grade students. Third-grade classes rotated through the media center as each student sat at a place setting with a snack, book, and genre menu form to complete. One student said, “I liked how it brought me out of my comfort zone of picking the same books over and over." (Douglas County Georgia Schools via Facebook)
  4. Bill Arp Elementary School (BAES) welcomed the return of the Patriot Pals program after a lengthy hiatus. BAES students are matched with student volunteers from Alexander High School. Together, the students play games, facilitate discussions about goals and progress, and serve as mentors and role models for their younger friends. This year features the first former program participant, Chandler Reinke. (Douglas County School System)
  5. There's no shortage of things to do in Douglas County Parks this season. Upcoming events include Young Chefs at Boundary Waters Activity Center every third Saturday, as well as Cardio Step every Thursday at Deer Lick Park.
