DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Douglas County firefighters rescued a man from a burning High Point Road home Tuesday morning, and a firefighter sustained injuries in the response, according to fire officials late Tuesday afternoon.

Fire crews were called around 8:45 a.m. to a single-family ranch style house in the 6800 block of High Point, according to the Douglas County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department in a news release.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, heavy flames were shooting from the front and the left side of the home, fire officials said.

Bystanders told firefighters someone was trapped inside of the home, and fire crews immediately went into the home without a fire hose line for a search and rescue.

Heavy black smoke inside of the house caused "almost zero visibility," fire officials said in the release. Firefighters found a man in the master bathroom and helped the person out of the home.

EMS crews provided preliminary care on scene before taking the man to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

While some firefighters were assisting the man, additional firefighters were extinguishing the fire.

Fire officials said heavy fire damage was contained to about 30-35 percent of the home with heavy smoke damage throughout the house. A firefighter sustained minor burns as a result and was treated and released.

“We are extremely proud of our first responders who entered the burning home at the risk of injury to rescue one of our residents,” Douglas County Interim Fire Chief Dr. Miles Allen said in the release. “This is what we train for, and our training was successful.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
