Keep Douglasville Beautiful To Hold 'Bring One For The Chipper'

Bring One for the Chipper is Georgia's annual Christmas tree recycling program that is set to begin.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA – Bring One for the Chipper is Georgia's annual Christmas tree recycling program. Each year, Keep Georgia Beautiful works with private sponsors to organize the recycling event. These statewide sponsors include The Home Depot, The Davey Tree Expert Company, Georgia Forestry Commission and WXIA-TV. Numerous local sponsors and volunteers also make contributions and provide in-kind services across the state.

Keep Douglasville Beautiful will be assisting with this year’s local Chipper Event held at the Home Depot located at 7399 Douglas Boulevard, Douglasville, GA 30135. Christmas tree drop off begins on Dec. 26 and runs through Jan. 4, 2019 for drop-off donations (unmanned); Jan. 5, 2019 there will be volunteers onsite from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Keep Douglasville Beautiful asks that all trees be free of lights and ornaments.

“Keep Douglasville Beautiful is proud to offer this opportunity to local residents for the 17th consecutive year,” Keep Douglasville Beautiful Executive Director, Chan Weeks, said. “By keeping trees out of our landfills, where they make take several years to decompose, the Christmas trees get a new life by being turned into mulch. This mulch is available free to residents by calling our Public Works department at 770-920-3005. We hope families will make “tree-cycling” part of their holiday tradition this year and for years to come.”

The trees will be recycled into mulch for playgrounds, city landscaping projects, and individual home use, and will also be used to provide habitats for fish and other animals. In addition, Christmas tree recycling programs like Bring One for the Chipper support wider eco-friendly holiday efforts. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, for each tree harvested, one to three seedlings are planted in its place. Nearly 350 million Christmas trees currently grow on U.S. farms, absorbing carbon dioxide, emitting fresh oxygen, stabilizing soil, protecting water supplies, and providing refuge for wildlife.
