Latest Douglas County Coronavirus Update

Here are the latest local updates on how the coronavirus outbreak is affecting Douglas County:

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA — The new coronavirus outbreak in Georgia and across the nation continues to affect Douglas County, where schools are closed for the rest of the academic year and businesses remain shuttered in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in Georgia continues to rise: 5,444 total on Thursday, 1,129 hospitalized and 176 dead. At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports Fulton County's 747 cases are the most of any Georgia locality, with 23 deaths recorded. The highest number of deaths is in Dougherty County, with 30; its total number of cases rank second at 521. The next highest number of cases are in DeKalb with 409 cases, Cobb with 341 cases, Gwinnett with 303 cases, Bartow with 153 cases and Carroll with 139 cases.

DOUGLAS COUNTY CASES, DEATHS

Two more people died in Douglas County because of the coronavirus: a 78-year-old male with underlying health conditions and an 84-year-old male whose prior condition was unknown. Douglas County added 15 coronavirus cases and now has 66 total as of Thursday evening.

SCHOOLS

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp Wednesday ordered all schools to stay closed for in-person instruction for the remainder of the academic year. In Douglas County, spring break still will be observed April 6-10. Digital learning will continue, with phase 2 set to begin April 13. Current information is posted on the Douglas County Schools' website.

MEETINGS

The Douglasville City Council will still hold its monthly meeting on April 6 at 6 p.m. but will probably meet via teleconference. Check the city website for the latest information.
