Latest Douglas County Coronavirus Update

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA — The new coronavirus outbreak in Georgia and across the nation continues to affect Douglas County, where schools are closed for the rest of the academic year and businesses remain shuttered in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in Georgia continues to rise: 10,566 total on Thursday evening, 2,159 hospitalized and 379 dead. At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports Fulton County's 1,276 cases are the most of any Georgia locality, with 45 deaths recorded. The highest number of deaths is in Dougherty County, with 62; its total number of cases rank second at 1,020. The next highest numbers of cases are in DeKalb with 742 cases, Cobb with 629 cases, Gwinnett with 603 cases, Clayton with 297 cases and Hall with 238 cases.

DOUGLAS COUNTY CASES, DEATHS

Douglas County tallied 127 coronavirus cases as of Thursday evening, with deaths holding steady at five. All of the deceased were 58 or older. Only two were known to have underlying health issues.

SCHOOLS

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp Wednesday ordered all schools to stay closed for in-person instruction for the remainder of the academic year. In Douglas County, spring break still will be observed April 6-10. Digital learning will continue, with phase 2 set to begin April 13. GOVERNMENT

City of Douglas and Douglas County offices and facilities currently are closed. Court hearings have been postponed through May 13, with court-service offices closed unless otherwise notified. The 2020 Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival, Garden Tour & Flower Show scheduled for June 6-7 has been cancelled for the year.
