Latest Douglas County Coronavirus Update

Here are the latest local updates on how the coronavirus outbreak is affecting Douglasville and Douglas County:

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA — The new coronavirus outbreak in Georgia and across the nation continues to affect Douglas County, where schools are closed for the rest of the academic year and businesses remain shuttered in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in Georgia continues to rise: 22,491 total on Friday evening, 4,322 hospitalized and 899 dead. All numbers are roughly twice what they were a week ago.

At 6:30 p.m. Friday, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports Fulton County's 2,500 cases are the most of any Georgia locality, with 91 deaths recorded. The highest number of deaths is in Dougherty County, with 108; its total number of cases rank third at 1,465. The second highest numbers of cases is in DeKalb with 1,721 cases. Gwinnett is fourth with 1,382 cases, Cobb is fifth with 1,368 cases, Hall is sixth with 1,022 cases and Clayton is seventh with 629 cases.

DOUGLAS COUNTY CASES, DEATHS

Douglas County tallied 276 coronavirus cases as of Friday evening, with eight deaths. One of the deceased was 32, but all others were 56 or older. Six were known to have underlying health conditions.

SCHOOLS

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp Wednesday ordered all schools to stay closed for in-person instruction for the remainder of the academic year. Current information is posted on the Douglas County Schools' website.

GOVERNMENT

City of Douglas and Douglas County offices and facilities currently are closed. Court hearings have been postponed through May 13, with court-service offices closed unless otherwise notified. The 2020 Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival, Garden Tour & Flower Show scheduled for June 6-7 has been cancelled for the year.
