Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:
- William D. Honea, a 25-year-old man Douglasville man, was arrested by Columbus police after leading officers on a chase in a stolen vehicle. Police say they received a Flock camera notification for the stolen vehicle and located it in a business parking lot; when officers approached, the vehicle started and hit another car while backing up. Honea then reportedly drove into a nearby hotel parking lot, at which time he was arrested; narcotics and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle. The suspect is facing multiple charges, including theft, drug possession, and resisting law enforcement. (The Republic)
- The Douglas County Board of Elections will be hosting a Voter Education Townhall on Wednesday, Mar. 22. The event will take place at 6 p.m. at the Woodie Fite Senior Center. State-certified election officials will be on hand to answer questions about voter education, civics, and election laws, as well as demonstrate the use of voting equipment. - Douglas County officials accused of bid rigging — including Commission Chair Romona Jackson Jones, Commissioner Henry Mitchell, and Tax Commissioner Greg Baker — will have some of their legal fees paid by the county. According to county attorney Michael Coleman, the payments are intended to ensure the accused parties have legal representation during the preliminary stages, and any such payments will be submitted to insurance for reimbursement. However, legal expert Jessica Cino reports this move is not typical. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- In celebration of Art and Culture Month, Douglas County is hosting an art exhibition and talk with local artist Ren Dillard on Monday, Mar. 20. The event will be held at the 1st Floor Atrium at the Douglas County Courthouse, starting at 6:30 p.m. There will be a reception immediately after the talk, providing an opportunity for a "meet and greet" with Dillard. - The Douglasville Police Department in Georgia is hosting a Spring Community Yard Sale on Saturday, Apr. 15. The yard sale will take place outside on their front lawn and offers 12x12 grass areas for sellers.
