Pedestrian Killed On I-20 Was Fleeing Break-In: Police

A man that a Douglasville police officer said she saw breaking into a business was killed Friday morning when he fled across Interstate 20.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — A fatal accident involving a pedestrian blocked eastbound traffic on Interstate 20 in Douglasville for nearly four hours Friday morning.

The accident was caused by a suspect fleeing a break-in at the Best Buy on Douglas Boulevard. When a Douglasville Police officer spotted him at about 4:20 a.m., he and another suspect ran across I-20 to escape. One of the suspects was struck and killed by a passing motorist, according to a social-media post from the Douglasville Police Department. The second suspect made it safely across the interstate but was apprehended a short time later near Rose Avenue.

The identities of both suspects are being withheld until their families can be notified.

Several lanes of I-20 had reopened to traffic by mid-morning Friday, a spokesperson for Douglasville police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The pedestrian death and interstate shutdown added to an extraordinarily bad Friday for Atlanta drivers. In addition to the Douglasville accident, two separate shootings shut down highways in Clayton and Gwinnett counties. The victim of the Gwinnett shooting died later at a local hospital.
