  1. Carlyn Seese of Douglasville received a scholarship from the Scottish Rite Foundation of Georgia, as announced yesterday, Jun. 26. Ms. Seese plans to obtain a Master of Education Degree in Communication Disorders at Valdosta University in 2024. She says the award has enhanced her educational experience by relieving her of financial worry. Since 1980, The Scottish Rite Foundation has awarded more than 2.4 million dollars to students for the benefit of their communities. (Valdosta State University)
  2. Christopher Morgan, Jr. of Douglasville took first place in the 2023 Braille Challenge's Junior Varsity division. The Braille Institute announced the winners last Saturday at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The competition has five levels — apprentice through varsity — and tests competitors' knowledge, fluidity, and accuracy in reading, writing, and understanding Braille.   3. Keep Douglasville Beautiful will meet today, Jul. 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the Farmers Market. The Keep Douglasville Beautiful Board consists of eight members who are appointed by the mayor and city council to serve a two-year term. In addition to tonight's meeting, the board usually meets on the Third Thursday of every month at the Ike Owens Community Center. (douglasvillega.gov)
  4. If you've always wanted to paint yourself neon, wear a bright glow outfit, and run a 5K race at night, get ready for the Ready, Set Glow 5K! The event, hosted by The Douglas County Sheriff's Office SCOPE unit, will take place on Sep. 9 at Boundary Waters Park from 6:30-9:00 p.m. To register, go to Celebrate Douglas County.   5. A drive-through urgent care center will open this August in nearby Buckhead. Patients with severe injuries can still be treated inside the facility, but simpler treatments can be implemented while patients sit in their cars.
