Two Charged, Including Victim's Brother, In Teen Death At Douglasville Gas Station

After a young girl was brought to a Marathon gas station with a gunshot wound and died, a 19-year-old and 13-year-old face murder charges.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Two boys were charged in connection with a fatal shooting of a young girl at a Douglasville gas station over the weekend — including the victim's brother — and both were denied bond Tuesday, the Douglas County Sentinel reported.

Yusef McArthur El, 19, and Wilson Scott, 13, were charged with murder in connection with the death of the girl, who has been identified as 14-year-old Kyra Scott. Wilson and Kyra are siblings, Douglas Sheriff Tim Pounds told the Sentinel.

Around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, a car pulled up to the Marathon gas station on Stewart Mill Road where two women, who have not been identified, pulled a young girl out of the backseat who was clearly injured. A young boy with the two women was screaming that the girl — Kyra Scott — had been shot.

According to arrest warrants obtained by the Sentinel, the shooting started when El tried to rob Wilson Scott of a ghost gun. As El was running from the Scotts' home with the stolen gun, Wilson Scott shot a 9mm handgun in his direction, and it hit his sister Kyra in the upper right chest area.

The two women tried to take Kyra to the hospital but pulled up at the gas station pleading for help, a witness told WSB-TV.

Wilson Scott will be charged as an adult, the Sentinel reported, and El is being held in the Douglas County jail. El faces a murder charge as well as robbery-sudden snatch, according to jail records. Both boys were denied bond Tuesday morning.

The Scott family confirmed to 11Alive Tuesday that Kyra's 13-year-old brother is in custody.

Though Wilson Scott will be tried as an adult, he will be housed in a youth detention center as the case moves through the legal system, according to the Sentinel.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by Kyra's older sister, Auriel Sam, to help with funeral costs for Kyra.

"Kyra was the kindest little girl you would've ever met. She had the biggest heart and always wanted to be around her family," Sam wrote on the GoFundMe page, which can be found here. "I never thought I would lose my sister to gun violence. This is a very difficult time for our family and we ask for your prayers."

Douglas County School System Superintendent Trent North released a statement Tuesday evening about Kyra Scott's death:

"The Douglas County School System is devastated by the recent loss of one of our students. This student was a valued member of our family and will be deeply missed.

"This loss has shocked and saddened our learning community. For students, this loss has been unbearable. Monday morning, we activated our Crisis Response Team. This team of specially trained counselors, school psychologists, social workers and school administrators will continue to support students as needed. Professional School Counselors will also be available throughout the school year to provide students comfort and reassurance.

"The next few days and weeks will be particularly challenging for our community. But as the Douglas County community has many times before, we will be there for each other. We will comfort and encourage each other. Our school system will stand firm and continue supporting those impacted by the tragedy as we navigate through this difficult time."
