Davenport Road Improvements Nearly Completed

Improvements include new sidewalks, curb and gutter, drainage, and slight road widening.

Installation of sidewalks and other improvements along Davenport Road from Buford Highway to just past Bromley Rowe is nearly complete ahead of schedule. Workmen were laying sod on lawns of houses along the road last week.

The improvements include new five-foot sidewalks on both sides of the street, curb and gutter, drainage, repaving, and road widening to accommodate two full-lane widths, curbs and gutters. The approximate length of the project is 2,400 linear feet.

The contractor SD&C Inc. began work April 4 with completion scheduled for October. Duluth Economic Development Manager Chris McGahee reported on the progress of the improvements at the Duluth Downtown Development Authority meeting July 26.

The sidewalks will improve pedestrian safety along Davenport Road and increase walking access to downtown Duluth. The project, which also has dramatically improved the appearance of the neighborhood, was funded by the city with SPLOST and grant funds.

McGahee also reported that improvements to West Lawrenceville Street have been completed. The road has been repaved, sidewalks installed, and new shepherd’s hook street lights erected on existing poles. The only thing remaining to be done, he said, is sodding three lawns disrupted by construction. This has to wait until fall due the type of grass.
