The Thanksgiving holiday period is one of the heaviest-traveled in Georgia each year, and this year begins Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. and ends Sunday night, Dec. 1.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, impaired drivers, drivers traveling too fast for conditions, and the lack of safety belt use are the leading contributing factors to fatal crashes.

Georgia State Patrol troopers, who have a post in Duluth, will be patrolling throughout the holiday period.

Troopers will be enforcing the state's primary safety belt law that now includes pick-up trucks.

Statistically, the highest number of traffic deaths ever recorded for the Thanksgiving holiday period was 43 in 1969, and the lowest was four in 1949.
