Duluth Officer Dies, Remembered For 'Selfless Service'

Police said a Duluth officer, who had an eternal impact and "larger-than-life personality," died at his home.

DULUTH, GA — A Duluth police officer died Wednesday morning at his home of an unknown cause, authorities said.

Duluth Police identified the officer as Master Patrol Officer Javier Bahamundi, who had been with the department for nearly 18 years. A cause of death was not immediately known.

"We ask that you keep Officer Bahamundi’s family, friends and his colleagues here at the Duluth Police Department in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. His loss leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory and impact will forever remain in our hearts.
Rest in peace, Javier. We will take it from here," police said in a Facebook post.

Bahamundi was a detective before returning to patrol, police said. While at Duluth, police said he created a Spanish-speaking Citizens Police Academy.

"Officer Bahamundi’s career was filled wwith selfless service. ... His dedication, kindness and larger-than-life personality will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him," police said.

Duluth Police organized a GoFundMe for Bahamundi. As of early Friday afternoon, the fundraiser had collected more than $3,000. Donations will benefit Bahamundi's family, organizers said.
