Hit-And-Run Suspect Sought In Woman's Killing In Duluth

A Duluth hit-and-run killed a Sandy Springs woman during a deadly storm that ravaged Georgia, police said.

DULUTH, GA — Police are still searching for the suspect in a hit-and-run that killed a Sandy Springs resident during Hurricane Helene's wrath on Duluth and other parts of Georgia.

Gwinnett County Police on Wednesday said Mecha Woodard, 24, pulled her car over for an unknown reason and was walking east along State Route 316 near Breckinridge Boulevard when she was hit by a car.

This happened around 4 a.m., Sept. 27, 2024, when the deadly storm Helene slammed Georgia, police said.

The suspect's car, identified as either a 2019–2022 Lexus RX 350 or Lexus RX 450, sustained damage on the front passenger-side bumper and headlight, police said.

Investigators collected parts from the suspect's car at the scene, police said. Police have not released a description of the suspect.
