GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — An older woman in a hospital bed was rescued from a smoky Sugar Hill home, while a Duluth fire sparked in a garage, on Wednesday afternoon, Gwinnett County fire officials said.

The first house fire occurred around 4:45 p.m. in the 5100 block of Stick Court Northeast in Sugar Hill, according to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

When crews arrived, they did not see fire but found smoke filling the inside of a room, fire officials said. Neighbors told firefighters they believed the homeowner remained in the home, fire officials said.

Fire officials said the smoke alarms failed to activate during an accidental fire at the home. Smoking products were the cause of the fire, officials said.

About an hour later, firefighters were dispatched to a second house fire in the 3200 block of Ennfield Lane Northwest in Duluth.

The heavy blaze took place in a garage, fire officials said, adding no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
