Post 2 Candidates Prepare for Duluth Council Runoff
A primary challenger makes more of his plans known.

More is known about the post-election plans of a candidate from Duluth's City Council election. But that adds to the uncertainty of the Post 2 runoff.
Kirkland Carden, who finished just 10 votes shy of a total needed to be included in a runoff election, has decided not to endorse either of the two runoff candidates.
In an email to Patch, Carden said: "After taking some time to reflect upon my election experience, I have decided that I am not going to endorse either of the remaining candidates for City Council Post 2.
"During the course of the election, I’ve gained respect for both of my former opponents; therefore, over the next month I will work to encourage voters of Duluth to learn about the candidates’ positions on issues that will impact our daily lives. Run-off elections are notorious for having significantly low turnout. As a former candidate in the 2013 municipal elections, I encourage people to invest in their futures by voting in next month’s run-off election."
Carden got 29.1 percent of the votes in the Nov. 5 general election, just nine less than Seth Grey (29.9 percent). Incumbent Jim Dugan received 40.9 percent of 1,156 votes cast for Post 2.
Dugan continues to stress his experience. After the election, he said: "I still feel I have the most experience and having lived here for 28-plus yrs and being involved with the community from day one, I feel I’m more in touch with those who live and work in our city.
"I also have 180 (hours) of government training from the Carl Vinson Institute which helps me be a better leader and decision maker to represent our citizens while serving on City Council. I think I’ve served the city well during my tenure and hope to continue doing what’s right and good for Duluth and making us the best city in Gwinnett."
Grey said after the election: "I am so grateful for every single voter that came and voted for me. It is humbling to think about someone casting their vote for you. I am excited about the Runoff Election and I will continue to work hard at getting my message out to the residents of Duluth."
The runoff election will be held Tuesday, Dec. 3, with all voting at City Hall. Any early voting period will be announced by city officials.
