Southern Baptists Adopt Alternative Name

The nation's largest Protestant denomination has adopted an alternative name.

At its recent convention in New Orleans, the Southern Baptist Convention adopted the optional title "Great Commission Baptists."

An online poll by the SBC's Lifeway Research of 2,000 Americans found that 44 percent said that knowing a church was Southern Baptist would negatively impact their decision to visit or join, according to the Huffington Post.

The term "Great Commission" refers to Jesus' command to his apostles to go forth and make disciples of all nations. The term "Great Commission" also is familiar to Gwinnett residents from the recent evangelical visit by NFL quarterback Tim Tebow.
