2 Escape Through Sunroof As Car Sinks In Lake Near Dunwoody

Sedan sank in 15 feet of water as men were inside, police say.

BROOKHAVEN, GA -- The two occupants of a car that plunged into a lake Sunday near Dunwoody had to scurry through the sunroof to escape, Patch has learned.

The two men then swam through Murphey Candler Lake, located near Ashford Dunwoody Road just off West Nancy Creek Drive, to the shore, police said.

The car sank in about 15 feet of water, a fire official told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Both men escaped injury in the incident, which began when they were trying to park the car by the lake, Brookhaven Police spokesman, Maj. Brandon Gurley, told news media.

The car, a dark-colored four-door sedan, was pulled out of the lake by a tow truck.

Murphey Candler Lake is one of the city's great fishing holes, known for its bass and catfish. The lake is located in Murphey Candler Park, a 135-acre green space with tennis courts, a football field and other sports activities.

According to the AJC, a dive team assisted in getting the car out of the lake.
