Air Force Major Honored at Marist

Dunwoody native Air Force Major John L. Carroll gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country in 1972.

On Thursday, the Marist School and the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association honored Dunwoody native Air Force Major John L. Carroll, who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country in 1972.

According to a report from Neighbor Newspapers, Carroll was losing fuel and power when his aircraft was struck by enemy fire.

Carroll's plane went down and he then fought off two north Vietnamese companies with a revolver, hand grenades and a rifle while he waited for help. However, those enemy companies held off any help that came to rescue Carroll and he died there on Nov. 7, 1962.
