Dunwoody Blood Center Unveils $1.1M Renovation

The LifeSouth Atlanta Community Blood Center will celebrate its remodeling on Jan. 9 with a ribbon-cutting and tours of the facility.

Following the completion of its $1.1 million revamp, the LifeSouth Atlanta Community Blood Center in Dunwoody plans to celebrate its updated facility this week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house.

“It’s a night and day difference. It’s much more open, much brighter,” LifeSouth Georgia District Director Kim Edwards said of the donor center. “Behind the scenes we basically built a new building inside the existing building.”

The facility, located at 4891 Ashford Dunwoody Road, features energy-efficient coolers and freezers, a newly-equipped and configured hub for processing blood, refurbished staff office space and an enlarged, covered parking area for bloodmobiles.

Held in partnership with the Dunwoody Chamber of Commerce, the ribbon-cutting ceremony begins at noon on Friday, Jan. 9, and LifeSouth invites all community members to attend.

Event attendees are also invited to become donors. Post-holiday blood shortages mean that O-negative blood and platelet donations are especially important.

Founded in 1974, LifeSouth came to Georgia in 1995 to provide both a donor center and serve as LifeSouth’s Georgia headquarters. In 1999, the organization moved into the former Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Urgent Care Center building, and opened its doors in 2000 with minimal renovations.

“This is the first major renovation we’ve done, and it was huge project that we did in four phases beginning last May,” Edwards added. “We’re eager for people to meet our staff, see the improvements and get an up-close look at the work they seldom get a chance to see.”

The center is open Monday through Sunday with varied hours. Visit LifeSouth Atlanta Community Blood Center online for complete hours of operation, volunteer opportunities, or information about its services.
