Dunwoody Council Approves Fines for False Security Alarm Calls

The city is hoping to cut down on the amount of false security alarm calls requiring a police response.

The Dunwoody City Council approved an initiative designed to cut down on false security alarm calls which required a police response.

According to a report from 11 Alive, the Dunwoody Police Department responded to 4,000 false security alarm calls in 2012.

The calls are a drain on the department's manpower and resources, Dunwoody Police Chief Billy Grogan told the news station.

In a unanimous vote, council members decided to hire Cry Wolf to examine false alarms and issue fines to repeat false alarm offenders.

The new ordinance mandates that all business owners pay a $25 one-time fee to register their security alarms with the city. Homeowners would also have to register their security alarms.

The first two false alarms would be exempt from fines, but the third false alarm would result in a $50 fine. Fines increase $50 from there before reaching a maximum amount of $500.
