Granny Gem Thief Too Sick For Trial: Report
Documents filed in Doris Payne's Fulton County arrest put her trial on hold.
DUNWOODY, GA -- Doris Payne, the octogenarian jewel thief known for her criminal exploits across the world, is too sick for trial in Fulton County, Patch has learned.
The motion was filed relating to Payne's October 2015 arrest in which she allegedly stole some diamond earrings from Saks Fifth Avenue in Buckhead's Phipps Plaza.
The development effectively means that a trial for the 86-year-old is on hold.

While there is no word on the specific ailment afflicting Payne, she has been known to resourcefully use whatever legal means at her disposal to evade serious prison time for her alleged crimes.
Just when prosecutors thought they had enough evidence to move forward with a trial, new documents recently filed in court say that Payne's medical condition prevents her case from moving forward, WXIA-TV reports.

"The Defendant in this matter has demonstrated, by and through her counsel, that her current medical condition(s) preclude this matter from moving forward toward final resolution," an order signed by Deputy Chief Judge Alford J. Dempsey Jr. says, according to WXIA.
Payne has a long history of mischief, including being wanted in several states and even internationally for shoplifting and other offenses. Her exploits border on the comical -- she reportedly pulled off a heist in Switzerland and escaped "through cornfields" -- to the improbable -- she once claimed to have lifted a 10-carat, $545,000 diamond ring out of Monte Carlo in the early 1970s.
Her life story is even on Netflix.
